Standards update - domestic and contract furniture

A meeting of the BSI standards committee, FW0/2 - domestic and contract furniture was recently held at BSI.  The committee, chaired by FIRA's Phil Reynolds had a full schedule dealing with a number of standards. This included:
BS 8509 - Children's beds
An amendment to this standard was agreed to include different requirements for junior beds (those aimed at children over 4 years old) to those for Toddler and cot-beds.
This amendment will go out for public consultation in November and publication, hopefully around March 2011.
pr EN 16121 - Requirements for non-domestic storage furniture
This new draft European standard for storage products covering hotel, education and other contract storage has recently been developed and the UK committee were developing the official UK response. Overall this is favourable, but the performance levels are lower than current British standards. The document is still 2 - 3 years away from becoming a full standard.
pr EN 16122 - Test methods for non-domestic storage furniture
This is a new draft European standard for storage products, complementing the requirements document. The document follows the format of the International Standard ISO 7170 and so received support from the UK committee. As with the requirements document, the standard is still 2 - 3 years away from publication.
pr EN 16139 - Requirements for non-domestic seating
DIN EN 16139 - DRAFT
01-Aug-2010 Draft Document - Furniture - Strength, durability and safety - Requirements for non-domestic seating; German version prEN 16139:2010
This is a new draft European standard merging the requirements from two other standards (EN 13761 - office visitor chairs and EN 15373 non-domestic seating). In general it is a straight forward merging of the two and the UK are happy with this. However, the UK is taking this opportunity to campaign against the 'rolling resistance' test which is not popular in the UK and means that all chairs with castors have to have 'break unloaded' castors which stop the chair moving unless somebody is sitting in it. Again the standard is still some way from publication.

EN 581-1 - Safety requirements for outdoor furniture
There are early indications that this standard will be revised or amended due to issues with the requirements for accessible gaps.
The UK formulated their view on how to proceed with changes to this document.
Looking forward there is also a lot of work in progress in Europe at the moment, which could impinge on UK manufacturers and suppliers in the near future, including:
EN 1728 - Test methods for seating, a full revision underway and first draft expected imminently for comment.
EN 1730 - Test methods for tables, a full revision underway and first draft expected imminently for comment.
EN 1957 - Test methods for mattress performance, a full revision underway and first draft expected imminently for comment.
En 13759 - Test methods for reclining mechanisms, a full revision underway and a second draft expected imminently for comment.
